Fall Wellness: A Season of Change

Fall is a season of change—and also one of the most important times to strengthen your immune system.

In Chinese medicine, autumn belongs to the Lung system and the Metal phase-element, which govern our immunity, emotional balance, boundaries, and our ability to let go.

As the air turns cooler, the days shorter, and the winds stronger, our bodies feel these shifts.

Some people notice they get sick more often, while others feel an increased sense of grief or perfectionism, which are also associated with Lung-Metal. Anxiety might also spike this time of year when we have trouble adjusting to the changes around us.

The key is to stay attuned to these changes and do what you can bring yourself back into balance.

By supporting your Lungs and living in harmony with the season, you can boost resilience, stay healthy, and feel more grounded as we transition toward winter.

Here are eight strategies from Chinese medicine and holistic wellness to keep your immunity strong and your mind-body system balanced this fall:

1. Eat Warming, Grounding Foods for Fall Immunity

Autumn is dominated by cool, windy, and erratic qualities. In the Pacific Northwest, the rains add dampness and chill, which can weigh down digestion and weaken the Lungs.

Balance this with foods that are warm and grounding:

fall foods
  • Flavors to favor: naturally sweet, sour, and salty.

  • Cooking methods: soups, stews, slow-roasted dishes, stir-fries. Use a little more healthy fat (olive oil, ghee, sesame oil) than in summer.

  • Seasonal helpers: pears, apples, squash, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, oats, and warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.

  • Gut health support: fiber-rich vegetables, fermented foods, and probiotic-rich options like sauerkraut or kimchi.

Try to limit raw vegetables, cold or frozen foods, iced drinks, and overly pungent or astringent flavors, which can tax digestion and deplete Lung qi.

2. Protect Lung Health: Stay Cozy and Wear a Scarf

In Chinese medicine, the back of the neck is vulnerable to wind and cold, which are thought to carry illness into the body. Keeping this area covered is a simple yet powerful immune defense. Bundle up, wear a scarf, and change out of damp clothes quickly to protect your qi.

3. Anchor Your Routine for Balance in Fall

The Metal element thrives on rhythm, structure, and simplicity. Fall is the perfect season to re-establish routines that strengthen immunity and support emotional well-being:

  • Go to bed a little earlier.

  • Eat meals at regular times.

  • Keep mornings grounding and calm.

  • Set aside time for journaling, meditation, or quiet reflection.

These anchor points help your body feel safe and supported amidst constant change.

4. Breathing Practices to Boost Lung Qi and Immunity

The Lungs are the “ruler of qi” in Chinese medicine, making breathwork a direct way to strengthen immunity, regulate stress, and restore balance.

Try these practices:

  • Box Breathing (calming & centering):
Inhale for 4 → Hold for 4 → Exhale for 4 → Hold for 4. Repeat several rounds. Perfect before bed or during stressful moments.
  • Wim Hof Method (energizing & immune-boosting):
Take 30–40 deep, fast breaths, then exhale and hold until you feel the urge to inhale.

Take one deep recovery breath and hold for 15 seconds or more. This strengthens resilience and oxygenates the body.

Practice safely, in a seated or lying position, never near water or while operating heavy machinery, including driving.

  • Breath of Fire (clearing & invigorating):
Quick, rhythmic inhales and exhales through the nose by pumping the diaphragm. Start with 30 seconds, then rest. Great when you need a mid-day energy boost.

Even just 5–10 minutes of daily breathwork can clear stagnation, support Lung qi, and strengthen immunity.

5. Release Stress and Stagnation with Somatic Bodywork

Sometimes, no matter how much we rest or breathe, stress and tension get stuck in the body. Over time, this can block the smooth flow of qi, weaken immunity, and keep us feeling heavy or anxious.

Somatic bodywork helps release what the body is holding onto—whether that’s stress, trauma, or emotional residue—so qi can circulate freely again. Patients often describe feeling lighter, calmer, and more resilient after sessions. This makes somatic bodywork a perfect support during the Lung season, when letting go is essential.

6. Strengthen Immunity with Regular Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the most effective ways to align your body with seasonal changes. Regular treatments—every 2 to 4 weeks in fall—help:

  • Strengthen Lung qi and immune defenses.

  • Regulate stress hormones.

  • Improve sleep quality.

  • Balance mood and emotions.

Think of acupuncture as seasonal maintenance for your mind-body system, keeping everything flowing smoothly as nature shifts.

7. Boost Circulation with Hot-Cold Showers

Hydrotherapy strengthens circulation and immunity by alternating between dilation and constriction of blood vessels.

At the end of a hot shower or bath, try rinsing in cold water.

You can even alternate hot and cold multiple times during one bathing session for extra benefit, as you would when enjoying a sauna. This invigorates your system and builds resilience.

A general rule of thumb is to end cold or luke-warm to seal the pores, but keep the pores open and keep a sweat going when you’re feeling under the weather.

8. Elderberry Syrup for Natural Immune Support

Elderberries have long been used to reduce the severity of colds and flus.

They’re rich in antioxidants and have a sour flavor, which nourishes the Lungs and Metal element in Chinese medicine.

Keep some syrup on hand as part of your fall wellness kit. You can pick up a bottle from our favorite local brand, Mickleberry Gardens, the next time you come to the clinic. We use this ourselves and the whole family loves it and asks for it, even when they’re not sick!

Embracing the Season of Change

Fall invites us to let go of what no longer serves us, protect our reserves, and prepare for the deep rest of winter. By eating seasonally, staying warm, practicing breathwork, and seeking support through bodywork and acupuncture, you can strengthen your immune system and move through autumn with balance and ease.

At The Embodied Wellness Studio, we love helping women align with seasonal rhythms through acupuncture, somatic bodywork, herbal medicine, and nutrition—so you can feel grounded, healthy, and resilient through every season of life.
